When you've spent years driving with air conditioning, it can be easy to forget that it even exists . . . until it stops working when you really need it. If the A/C system in your Subaru isn't blowing cold air, there are a number of possible causes. Below, we list five of the most common ones. Whatever the cause, it's best to have the system repaired at an authorized Subaru service center.

5. Your Subaru Has a Refrigerant Leak
Refrigerant is a crucial component of the A/C system. As it absorbs heat, refrigerant transitions from a liquid to a gas. As it loses heat, it becomes liquid again and returns to absorb hot air once again. If refrigerant leaks, your system may stop working as it should.
Finding a refrigerant leak can be difficult; when you bring your vehicle in, the technicians may perform a dye test to see exactly which part of the system is leaking refrigerant.

4. The Condenser Has Problems
The condenser cools the refrigerant when it's in its gaseous state, turning it back into a liquid again. If the condenser has sustained damage, it may cease functioning. A broken condenser will generally have to be replaced. However, the condenser may also be blocked. In this case, the object blocking it may simply have to be removed.
3. The Compressor Has Failed
The compressor pressurizes the refrigerant, making it circulate through the system. If the compressor has stopped working, the refrigerant won't go much of anywhere--and you won't get cool air.

2. There Are Electrical Problems
If any of the wires that power your vehicle's A/C system are frayed, worn, or otherwise damaged, the system could stop working. The diagnosis of electrical issues can be tricky, and is best left to experts.
1. Your Cabin Air Filter Needs To Be Replaced
If you feel some cool air coming through the system, but it's not nearly as cool as it should be, try to remember when you last changed the cabin air filter. If it's become clogged with debris, not as much cool air will be able to reach your vehicle's cabin. If this is the problem, simply replacing it should do the trick.
